Why Noise-Induced Hearing Loss is Rising in ‘the Most Health-Conscious Generation’
They’re cutting out alcohol. Eating plant-based diets. Spending more time outdoors and talking openly about mental health. Generation Z and younger millennials are, by many measures, the most health-conscious generations we’ve seen.
And yet, when it comes to hearing health, they may be walking straight into the mistakes of the past.
Despite decades of warnings about the dangers of loud music, headphones, and noisy workplaces, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is apparently on the rise, particularly among young people.
A Familiar Problem
Ask anyone from an older generation who spent years working in a factory, going to gigs, or playing in bands without ear protection and they’ll likely tell you they now live with tinnitus – permanent ringing in their ears – muffled hearing, or the need for hearing aids.
But it seems those hard-won lessons haven’t yet sunk in with many younger adults.
A 2024 UK survey commissioned by RNID found that:
- 58% of Gen Z (18–28-year-olds) had experienced hearing issues like tinnitus or temporary hearing loss after listening to loud music.
- Yet 35% said they still wouldn’t wear ear protection.
- And 75% admitted they were aware of the risks.

In other words, many young people know the risks—yet still aren’t properly protecting themselves.
It isn’t all about Ted Nugent (if you know, you’ll know!)
NIHL doesn’t happen only to people who attend festivals or play in rock bands. It’s caused by any prolonged exposure to sound over 85 decibels—which includes:
- Gym classes with pounding music
- Listening to music through headphones at high volume
- Standing near speakers in clubs or live venues
- Using power tools or being around building works without protection
Even brief exposure to very loud noise—such as a sudden over-enthusiastic solo at a gig or a firework close to the ear—can cause irreversible damage.

Why Don’t We Talk About Hearing Loss?
There’s a cultural lag when it comes to ears. Hearing health still doesn’t yet get the same attention as diet, skincare, or mental health. But as audiologists, we see the consequences of this every day, and once hearing is lost, it can’t be restored.
According to the World Health Organisation, over 1 billion people globally are now at risk of hearing loss due to unsafe listening habits.

The irony? This is the first generation to grow up with access to custom earplugs, noise-limiting headphones, and instant information about safe sound levels. Yet many are still regularly exposing themselves to dangerous volumes without any protection.
