Words Count

Words taken from a recent LinkedIn post by our founder and chief visionary officer, Robert Beiny:

I never thought I’d ever have anything in common with the 47th US President.

Well today I discovered both our words had been re-edited to create an entirely misleading impression.

As I write this, the media is full of the spat between Donald Trump and the BBC about the editing of his infamous January 6th speech, and resulting in a (currently) £1billion law suit for defamation.

I don’t think I’ll be taking The Daily Mail to court any day soon, or seeking an apology, but I was surprised to be told that my name appeared in an article this weekend written by journalist, Liz Jones. Her column explained about her hearing loss and the benefits she was experiencing now she is using the latest hearing aids.

All good… so far. But as I read on, I was shocked to see I was being quoted as saying people don’t wear hearing aids ‘out of shame’!

For those that know me well, I have spent my whole career educating others on the importance of the work of an audiologist and the responsibility foisted on us to support people who have issues with not hearing well.

I pick my words very carefully, I frame my messages with extreme caution, knowing full well how people can be traumatised by coming to terms with their altered sense of hearing.

This means a lot to me. It goes against everything I preach day in and day out. I know it would seem like a trifle to many people but some of my clients and patients have already contacted me to say how surprised they were that I would say something like this.

I didn’t. I never would. Fake news!

Thank you.
