As a recent wearer of hearing aids (expertly fitted by Natalie at Hearing Healthcare Practice), I am often asked whether it feels odd to have something in your ears all the time. The honest answer is no. I rarely notice them. Occasionally, one ear feels slightly itchy, but that is easily solved with a quick scratch. In fact, my ears are no itchier than they were before I started wearing hearing aids1
For many people, comfort is one of the biggest concerns when considering hearing aids. However, modern devices are designed to sit naturally in the ear and quickly become part of everyday life. Like me, most wearers report that, after a short adjustment period, they simply forget they are there.
A benefit many people don’t expect
One unexpected advantage is how useful hearing aids can be for work and enjoyment. Modern devices can connect directly to phones, computers, and tablets. In effect, this means wearing discreet wireless headphones throughout the day.
For anyone who spends time on phone calls, audio recordings, Zoom meetings, or Teams calls, this can make daily tasks easier. Conversations can continue while moving around the room, without needing to put on separate headphones. Even if the phone is not immediately to hand, calls can still be answered and heard clearly.
This level of connectivity can improve both efficiency and comfort at work and the easy enjoyment of music, podcasts, the radio or whatever you may enjoy listening to. Hearing aids do not simply improve hearing. They can also support communication in busy professional environments and improve convenience in everyday life.
Do people notice?
One little side effect is that others may occasionally think you are talking to yourself when taking a call hands-free. However, wireless earbuds have become so common that this rarely attracts much attention.
Hearing better and functioning better
For those considering hearing aids, particularly people who are still working or regularly taking part in meetings and conversations, the advantages go beyond improved hearing alone. Many modern devices help wearers stay connected, organised, and productive throughout the day.
In my own experience, wearing hearing aids has not only improved hearing clarity but has also made day-to-day communication easier.
