Under the National Institute of Clinical Excellence guidelines, many GP practices are no longer providing wax removal and ear cleaning services, as syringing (especially in inexperienced hands) can cause trauma to the ear.
As Practice Founder, Robert Beiny highlights;

Unlike traditional ear cleaning using syringing, which uses water, we use gentle micro suction under a microscope to remove wax. As well as trapping dirt and any creepy crawlies, wax acts as a skin lubricant providing anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties –ensuring the ear is kept healthy. Ear wax naturally moves out of the ears. In fact, every time we talk, chew or yawn we are encouraging this process. Whilst many people remain unaffected, ear wax that doesn’t move as it should can be a real issue for some.”

The common symptoms of impacted ear wax are a blocked up feeling, drop in hearing, or tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness and discomfort. You can self-clean your outer ear only, gently wiping with a warm flannel but never poke around inside your ear canal or use cotton buds as you can cause damage. It can also compact wax – making it impossible to come out in the usual way. In addition, the ear ends up making more wax which exacerbates the problem!
