Have you Heard it’s Christmas?

Hearing at Christmas

Christmas Time is Hear…ing Strain.

As the festive season approaches, it’s a time for connection. Yet, for many people, Christmas gatherings highlight challenges with hearing. A recent study reveals that the noise and commotion of these celebrations leave over half of us feeling overwhelmed. For some, this period is also when they first realise they might have a hearing issue.

Christmas Conversations: The Challenges

The study discovered that 69% of those aged 55 to 64 struggle to follow conversations during the festive season, and this number is similar among younger adults aged 18 to 24. The main culprits? Loud music, noisy children, and family members talking over one another! For 41%, loud music is the biggest obstacle, while four in 10 cite noisy children as the main challenge.

Recognising the Signs of Hearing Strain

Christmas gatherings, with their lively and often chaotic atmosphere, can be especially challenging for those with undiagnosed hearing loss. Here are some key indicators:

Difficulty keeping up: Missing parts of conversations, especially in noisy settings.
Ringing in the ears: One in four people report experiencing ringing in their ears after festive events.
Overwhelmed by noise: 53% of people say the sheer volume of activity leaves them feeling overwhelmed.

It’s also worth noting that over a third of people have spent time with someone struggling to hear during Christmas. Many try to help by speaking more clearly, reducing background noise, or using gestures to aid communication.

Supporting Loved Ones During Festive Gatherings

At Hearing Healthcare Practice we’ve always encouraged people to be mindful of those who might find gatherings and large groups challenging. Simple steps can make a big difference:

Turn down background noise: Lowering the volume of music or switching off competing sounds can help conversations flow more easily. Speak clearly and face the person: Making eye contact and speaking at a moderate pace ensures everyone feels included.
Choose quieter moments (if you can!) : Perhaps reserve your most meaningful conversations during quieter times of the day.

Encouraging Action

For many people, the festive season is when they first notice they’re struggling to hear. Yet, on average, it takes 10 years for someone to seek help after experiencing initial hearing problems. Addressing hearing concerns early can improve quality of life and strengthen relationships.

If you or a loved one is finding it difficult to hear, please do consider a hearing assessment. At Hearing Healthcare Practice, our award-winning audiologists are here to help you enjoy every moment of the festive season.
